The Tony Awards are happening. I don’t imagine many will care all that much about the winners or the nominees or who wore the ugliest dress, because we’ve not watched many Broadway plays recently. I still like to picture the ceremony though; more narcissism than celebrity big brother, endless maniacal laughter, one million feather boas, super old school death stares and celebrities that we all thought had decent eyesight, suddenly wearing spectacles.
Also, do I adore the theatre. Is it still possible to make the claim, without looking like a deranged extra from The Great Gatsby? Or pretty much anyone in Glee? I guess I’m even crazier because I say that and good or bad aside, I simply have no taste whatsoever; I just love musicals because literally any harmony makes me melt on the inside. I appreciate that the Tony Awards also celebrate plays, but they don't have any harmonies. So I didn't do much research on those. A brief summary - Clybourne Park is supposed to be the favourite. It won a Pulitzer last year.
So. Yes. The Tony Awards! Harmonies! Disney made a musical! It’s called ‘Newsies’ and features lots of handsome youths sporting flat caps. Automatic win. Also, they made a stage version of that movie Once. I would so vote for such an adorable couple, being adorable live onstage. Plus, there are like a thousand harmonies, most of which are very heartfelt and by the looks of things, the choreography includes ukulele props. Modern!
Luckily Youtube makes everything look like tiny, pirated films. So if theatre makes you nervous, just pretend it isn’t theatre!
