Well here’s a tailor-made documentary subject if there ever was one; a dude wants to build an actual SS Enterprise. Yes, that enormous, pivotal component of Star Trek. The man mysteriously named ‘Dan’ almost can’t believe it hasn’t already happened and he reckons it will only cost a trillion dollars, a bargain if you spread the development over 20 years. Go ‘Dan!’ The man’s reasoning behind the suggestion is that NASA spends loads of money on space trips that are like, dull. An SS Enterprise would be way more inspirational! Reading through the finer engineering points on his website, however, there would be a few differences in the actual model compared with the TV version. For example, all of the made-up science would not be used. And James T Kirk is not an actual space captain. I do like the FAQ section though:
Q: You seem pretty excited about this.
A: You are right. This is super cool.
Q: Live long and prosper.
A: Likewise. Thank you.
Would I trust ‘Dan’ with a trillion dollars? Hard to say. This all feels a bit like a promotional tool for The Big Bang Theory. And that program is pretty shit. Soz Dan. Plus what if they sent George Takei up in it? Facebook has made him such a likeable dude. I’d miss his aphorisms based on popular culture that he doesn’t do much else.
I’d say Prometheus would be a more topical space project choice. But actually, hiring Fassbender to live forever as a robot in space would probably cost more than a trillion dollars. Shame. Plus, I guess, well, that ship is little jinxed. Also there are rumours floating around that Paramount are making a new Star Trek movie. Maybe and if that's true we won’t need to make an actual Enterprise after all.
